54th St Native Pollinator Garden

ABOUT: This project transformed an abandoned corner lot controlled by the California Department of Transportation (“Caltrans”) into a permanent pollinator garden and community gathering space. The freeway’s completion in the 1960s divided the neighborhood and created many vacant parcels.  Very little has been done to establish green spaces or communal public areas due to the historical disinvestment in the area. By revitalizing this land into a welcoming pollinator garden, the community aims to foster neighborhood connection and pride, showing what’s possible when people come together to care for public space.
