54th Street
Garden Project
This project will create a permanent pollinator garden and community gathering space on an abandoned corner lot controlled by the California Department of Transportation (“Caltrans”) that sits partially under a freeway overhead. The lot is prominently positioned at the entry point to a residential neighborhood adjacent to Oakland’s MLK corridor. The freeway’s completion in the 1960s divided the neighborhood and created neglected parcels. Very little has been done to establish green spaces or communal public areas due to the historical disinvestment in the area. By revitalizing this land into a welcoming pollinator garden, the community aims to foster neighborhood connection and pride, to deepen the sense of ownership over shared public spaces and to take one step towards healing the harm caused by the freeway construction.
Created by the Neighborhood
Local residents are very enthusiastic about this project and have organized several community meetings to decide on the garden design and designate roles for completing the project, including volunteer organizing, fundraising, and project implementation.
Caltrans approved the plans and issued encroachment permit in June 2025.
